The virus has caused schools to close, restricted standardized testing, and made extracurricular activities nearly impossible. For many schools, it no longer makes sense to prioritize grades, test scores, and public service records of a potential applicant. Therefore, many college applicants worry about how to stand out to admissions committees if these key features of the application process are de-prioritized. How will the coronavirus impact application to college? Not all students who meet the selection criteria are admitted into the limited-access majors. The selection process is very competitive and space is limited in each incoming class. Freshmen do not need to submit supplemental applications; applications are due in the sophomore year or when program prerequisite requirements have been completed. For more information about the AP transfer credit process, please visit the Advanced Placement Credit page. The Office of Admission offers merit-based scholarships to incoming first year students who distinguish themselves academically and personally within our highly competitive group of admitted students. These scholarships are based solely on merit and financial need is not taken into consideration. About 20% of admitted students are offered a merit scholarship each year. Below are the four major aspects of college admissions that have changed due to the pandemic. With numerous essays, generic questions, and deadlines, secondary applications for medical school can be overwhelming. Initial residency classification is determined by the Office of Admissions after applicants have been admitted to the university. All applicants are considered non-Florida residents until they provide proof otherwise. A limited-access program is one where both program admission and registration in program classes are restricted to a certain number of students meeting pre-determined criteria. This means that you are initially accepted into the university as a pre-major AND then you must submit a supplemental application for consideration for acceptance into a limited-access undergraduate major. Transfer credit will not be awarded for courses included on a student’s high school transcript and used to satisfy high school graduation requirements, i.e. dual credit courses. Only those students who have more than 20 college preparatory courses may have the Office of the Registrar consider for Rice credit their college courses taken in high school. For more information about the transfer credit process, please visit the Transfer Credit page. Failure to provide all relevant information and required documentation in a timely manner could result in a non-Florida resident classification for tuition purposes. An online Florida Residency Declaration For Tuition Purposes form is available to provide the necessary documentation as described below. You can often find out how a file is reviewed by attending an information session at the schools on your college list. Usually one to two admissions officers read an essay. Some colleges will choose only to look at your GPA, Course Rigor and SAT/ACT scores. If you GPA and Test Scores are high enough, they may not feel that and essay is necessary. Your encouragement, ideas and overall support can go a long way in helping your students write their essays. Emphasize to students the importance of writing an informed essay. For example, they should not write about a fantasy meeting with a famous artist and get the titles of the artist’s paintings wrong. You might be used to turning in your writing assignments on a page-limit basis. While some colleges provide page limits for their college essays, most use a word limit instead. This makes sure there's a standard length for all the essays that a college receives, regardless of formatting or font. All admitted students will be sent this online link. Limited-access programs have separate admissions processes and selection criteria.

How To Write A Great College Admissions Essay

How To Write A Great College Admissions Essay The other subject to handle delicately is loss or tragedy. Colleges want to admit students who are ready to be successful members of their community. DEEP WEB RESEARCH. This should be the heart of your essay, as well as the meat and potatoes. Reading the school’s website is not a bad start, as it will give you a basic overview of what’s on offer. Keep an eye peeled for course listings, recent news events, maps and descriptions of important campus buildings, student run organizations, and other key terms. Then take those terms and plug them right into Google, Youtube and Linkedin! After reading links on the things that interest you, you’ll understand it almost as well as someone at the school! Grammar or punctuation errors are the most unnecessary â€" and unfortunately common â€" mistakes that appear on The Common App. Every year, a student will address the essay to a specific school and not realize the application is sent to every school the student applied to, she said. This advice applies to most creative writing situations. We assume some well-meaning English teacher shared this advice with you in high school. Admissions officers aren’t interested in a timeline of events or a bullet-list of accomplishments. What they’re really seeking is a story, a personal narrative, a reflection that carries subtext. That story shows your hard work, dedication, and generosity without ever referring explicitly to these fantastic qualities. The Common Application also gives you the option of responding to one of 7 different essay prompts. If you will be using the Common App, you’ll be able to choose, and write about, one of these prompts. If you don't plan on using the Common App, these prompts can still offer insight into a topic you'll likely be writing on for your school of choice. So whether you’re seeking flexibility in your college admission essay or you’re just doing a little preliminary research on likely essay prompts, the Common App is a good place to start. When I say they are “not very good”, I mean they are either boring, impenetrable, melodramatic, or all of the above. Some schools will tell you that two separate readers evaluate every essay in its entirety. Given volume, staff sizes, and compressed timelines between application deadlines and decision release, that seems at worst a blatant lie, and at best an incredibly inefficient process. However, if you’re applying to an Ivy League school or a smaller liberal arts college, then they’re really looking at the whole package and the essay can be very important. At some of these schools, there are very few students who don’t have near-perfect test scores and GPAs, so how do you stand out? They’re looking at your essay, recommendations and activities to understand the whole picture of you. It all depends on where you’re applying, your grades and your test scores. If you’re applying to a large state institution, and your numbers are strong relative to their average student body, then you’ll get in on the strength of your four years of hard work. The bottom line is that they may be getting 25,000 applications, and they simply don’t have time to sift through essays and recommendations. There are so many terrific free resources online â€" just google “brainstorming college essay” and you’ll be pleased with what comes up. Also, look at the Common Application essay promptsâ€" one of them will speak to you, but you need to really read them. Don’t turn in your essay without someone else reading through it, Corner advises. But the same is true for college essays, as Orwell doubtlessly would have realized if he were reanimated and handed him a sheaf of Common Applications. Better College Decisions, Admissions Advice & Application Data

Better College Decisions, Admissions Advice & Application Data When I first began, I had my counselor and history teacher read my draft because I felt very unsure about the intention and content of my essay. However, neither of them have ever seen my final draft. Throughout the process, I also had several close friends read my drafts. It told a story of the struggle between two cultures that many immigrant students experience, and furthermore, it didn’t reveal anything about me that felt unique or essential to my personality. Reading the school’s website is not a bad start, as it will give you a basic overview of what’s on offer. Keep an eye peeled for course listings, recent news events, maps and descriptions of important campus buildings, student run organizations, and other key terms. Given volume, staff sizes, and compressed timelines between application deadlines and decision release, that seems at worst a blatant lie, and at best an incredibly inefficient process. All in all, we see a student who is a skilled writer with a warm heart â€" positive traits, to be sure. In our College Essay Clichés to Avoid post, we advised students against writing about moving to America from a foreign country. DEEP WEB RESEARCH. This should be the heart of your essay, as well as the meat and potatoes. It all depends on where you’re applying, your grades and your test scores. Also, look at the Common Application essay promptsâ€" one of them will speak to you, but you need to really read them. Second, students want validation that they have done a worthy job on their essay, and they naturally gravitate towards the adult mentors in their life. A college counselor or English teacher is great, but when we hear that parents, SAT tutors, or my-mom's-friend-who-is-good-at-writing are also weighing in, we start to worry. This essay doesn’t share many life-defining revelations; we learn, as a brief aside, that the author often cared for her younger siblings, but little beyond that. Yet despite its relative lack of major information, it reveals a lot about who the author is. We learn that the author knows how to turn a phrase, the author is a warm and caring person, the author has a sense of humor, and the author will bring us cookies if we admit her to our imaginary college. Every year, a student will address the essay to a specific school and not realize the application is sent to every school the student applied to, she said. Alternatively, some of my friends who were successful in the college admissions process met with their English teachers frequently to review their college essays. This allowed them to constantly have someone to bounce ideas off of and to receive assurance if they were going in the right direction and advice if they weren’t. Kids are quick to eliminate a prompt, but I always ask them to go back and rethink. Ask smaller questions around the prompt to get at exactly what you want to write about. The other subject to handle delicately is loss or tragedy. Colleges want to admit students who are ready to be successful members of their community. Inzer also encourages students not to stress too much over the essay and put unnecessary weight on it as part of their college application. I didn’t want to be labelled as just another Asian immigrant by college admissions. I started brainstorming as early as June before my senior year, but I didn’t actually start writing my first draft until mid-August. I finished right before my first deadline on October 15, and hardly touched my Common App essay afterwards. While I met my deadlines, I remember desperately wishing during late-September and early-October that I had finished at least the first draft of my Common App essay before school started. I wish I had kept in mind that college applications were not my only priority during senior year and planned more proactively accordingly so I that wouldn’t get stressed out.

How To Write An Essay

How To Write An Essay Show your knowledge of the college by mentioning specific courses, professors, places of interest, and more. Show how you fit into the campus culture and how you will impact the community through specific examples. When developing a topic that reveals something new, find a way to frame the story or idea that shows a slice of your life or the event. College counselors weighing in on the college review website Unigo indicated that, depending on the school, up to four people could read a single essay. For the application season, the Common Application announced that their 600-plus member schools, which include many private and public universities, need not require essays . Inside Higher Ed, a popular website monitoring issues in higher education, estimated that 20 percent of members will eliminate the essay requirement. You can write an excellent essay, but if you don’t focus on answering the question that the college is asking, you will likely not be admitted to the school. Read the top 147 college essays that worked at Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, and more. We connect students with top writing coaches for strategy calls and detailed essay feedback. Colleges use essays as the most important criteriato differentiate students. (noun, pl.) A completely masturbatory work of high school fiction, used by college admissions officials as psyops tests in order to evaluate your personality. These, on college applications, are better left blank, so long as your GPA, SAT, and other tests are in your advantage. Otherwise, sarcastic embellishment is usually required, in the form of a Hail Mary Pass. Some essays she read were “too stiff, too adult and too formal,” â€" not the student’s work. Jager-Hyman notes that every writer has an editor, and editors can help select topics, tell students where the essay is lacking and help them organize their thoughts. In this competitive climate, many students think their essay must reflect an earth-shattering achievement, like curing cancer or ending world starvation, but that’s not its purpose. It’s also not a place to reiterate one’s résumé or explain away a bad semester (there’s a section in the application for that). Colleges want to “hear specifically what you learned from an experience” â€" not clichés. Even with essay writing experience, it can be hard to frame a well-organized, comprehensive, thoughtful answer in 500 words or less. You might need to approach the questions from a few different perspectives before you find the right formula. DON’T reveal something you would never consider telling your parents â€" while honest essays can be strong, your college essay is not the place to admit to shoplifting or drunk driving. DO tell a story; your college essay will be more similar to your creative writing or journal assignments that to your persuasive essay. Use the story or stories you tell to illustrate a larger, more abstract point. Be descriptive and give details that appeal to the senses â€" taste, touch, smell, etc. When writing about a meaningful experience or event, you don’t have to give a long timeline of events. Instead, give the reader the piece of the puzzle that conveys your message. Good editors help students describe what makes them different and special. Still, Jager-Hyman says that some parents who get their hands on their kids’ essays go too far and change the tone or tenor. Spellcheck won’t catch every spelling or grammatical error! Take the time to read over all your essays carefully and keep an eye out for things like “out” when you meant to say “our” and other common typos. Have a parent or counselor read over the essay, too, to catch any errors you might have missed. Spelling and grammar errors can take away from an otherwise stellar essay â€" so be mindful. If the prompt of the essay was “Who is the most influential person in your life and why? ” don’t start the essay with “The most influential person in my life is…” It’s dull and the admissions office created the prompt, so it’s telling them the info they already know. Your essay may be the ultimate product, but before you start worrying about the final edition you’ll send off to colleges, take some time to work on the process. Free-writing will help you hone your skills and practice for the real thing. We’ll help you figure out what to write about, and we’ll help you finish all your essays early. You’ll submit on time and with confidence in your essays. We hope these essays inspire you as you write your own personal statement. Just remember to be original and creative as you share your story. When tailoring responses to individual college prompts, it’s important to use specific details you’ve learned through visiting and research. Not only does this show colleges that you’ve have done your homework, but it also demonstrates your interest in the college â€" and colleges want to admit students who are likely to enroll.

If it’s your story, your ideas, your thoughts and actions, you won’t be at risk of plagiarizing. They want to know what will happen next and what is the ultimate point you are making with the story. Pick a thought you want to concentrate on or a single point that you want to get across. They utilize many senses and often engage our emotions (if they don’t, it’s likely the movie won’t be a big hit). You can do the same in your essay by using imagery and storytelling. Make your audience “feel” something, take them on a journey, appeal to the “human factor.” And using emotion does not necessarily mean a heartbreaking story. It can be a story of love, friendship, kindness, or something funny, surprising, fearful, etc. If you start jumping back and forth, the reader may loose interest or become too distracted. For example, the word “completed” has many good synonyms including “concluded” and “ended.” However, don’t use words that are super fancy either, just for the sake of using them.

For a complete list of how to cite resources in MLA style, check out this site. The hard part of your essay should be coming up with an original analysis of your topic. The bibliography is formulaic and easy to get right if you give it a little effort. The point of an essay is to create an argument and defend a thesis. If you're writing about a work of literature, some background to clarify the topic can be helpful. But the majority of your essay should involve your analysis based on credible research. This means you can adjust your writing style to fit the message of the prompt. That might mean just a few edits here and there, or it may mean overhauling your essay, or simply writing a new one. Yes it would save time, and can save time, but only under certain circumstances. See, many colleges will ask for similar questions or essay prompts to include with your application. If you’ve already written an essay that happens to fit with another college’s similar prompt, then it should take you no time at all to spruce it up and submit it. Admissions officers tell us they read every essay. The number of reviewers reading the essays vary from school to school. Yes, every college essay is read if the college has asked for it . The number of readers depends on the college’s review process. It will be anywhere from one reader to four readers. Most colleges hire readers during the application season. Download four essays that got students into Cornell, the University of Chicago, and Smith to see how Story To College teaches students to find their unique stories and develop their authentic voices. They are looking for students who will make a difference in their classrooms, dorms, and communities. Where are the stories that reveal what you bring to the world? Do not be just another of thousands of applicants that do not make an impression. If you are reading a newspaper article, the writer fades behind the facts and you know nothing about the writer except that s/he can collect, organize, and present the facts that you need to now. You want the admissions reader to say, “Ah, this is a real person writing to me. Or, they capture a several-line conclusion in one pithy, well-worded phrase or sentence. Or, maybe they end with a simple, clean truth written from the heart.

College Essay Writing Tips

College Essay Writing Tips You want to approach writing your essay as if it were a creative writing piece. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that it’s a creative nonfiction piece. This means you are telling a true story in a creative form. You can bring creativity into your essay through the hook, a conceit, or through your syntax and diction. A&M states that the average length of most essays is a page and a half (think words.) A&M’s admission website states, “Additional essay will not be reviewed. What is the underlying information they want to learn from your essay? Write in a way that shows you are the best candidate for the scholarship. Get all your thoughts on paper, and you can extend or shorten the essay during the editing process. Give yourself at least two full days to write the essay. The only information some applicants may lack is access to updated supplemental questions. Some schools, like Wake Forest, have updated their supplement information on their admissions website, but many other universities won’t release these additional questions until August. Other students may want to use it as a checklist. Once they have written the first draft of a paper, they might compare their paragraphs to the list, noting what is missing and rewriting the paragraphs as appropriate. Some academic genres may not even require an introduction or conclusion. An annotated bibliography, for example, typically provides neither. A book review may begin with a summary of the book and conclude with an overall assessment of it. A policy briefing usually includes an introduction but may conclude with a series of recommendations. You can use the first day to write a draft and do some minor editing. Then on the second day, you can look at the essay with fresh eyes to do your final edits. Cell phone restrictions in classrooms should also include specific disciplinary actions for breaking the rules. If a student is caught using the phone in class, he or she should be excused for the rest of the day. Professors should refrain from physically taking possession of a student’s phone because of liability conflicts. Check your assignment carefully for any directions about what to include in your introduction or conclusion. If your essay deals with a contemporary problem, warn readers of the possible consequences of not attending to the problem. For most essays, one well-developed paragraph is sufficient for a conclusion. In some cases, a two-or-three paragraph conclusion may be appropriate. The word ‘essay’ derives from the Latin word ‘exagium’, meaning the presentation of a case. Always think about your audience when writing a scholarship essay. What organization is issuing the scholarship, and how can you tie that into your writing? As with introductions, the length of the conclusion should reflect the length of the essay. Broaden your focus a bit at the end of the essay. A good last sentence leaves your reader with something to think about, a concept in some way illuminated by what you’ve written in the paper. While writing your essay, you have to keep your ego in check. Although you want to come off as the best version of you, sometimes you can get carried away with the story and lose yourself in over exaggeration. The majority of any essay consists of multiple body paragraphs, and it is in these paragraphs where the main information is presented. The longer an essay is, the more body paragraphs there will be. Because the body paragraphs present the important facts and information from an essay, having well-written body paragraphs is essential in writing a successful essay. Most of the advice in this handout pertains to argumentative or exploratory academic essays. Be aware, however, that different genres have their own special expectations about beginnings and endings. In the five paragraph essay, each paragraph had a topic sentence and then a bunch of support —support which often consisted of a hodgepodge of examples sort of thrown at the reader in a kind of barrage. Consequently, essays all rely not only on the validity of the facts they communicate but also on the selection, critical evaluation, organisation, and presentation of these facts. When you write an essay you are making a case for the validity of a particular point of view, analysis, interpretation, or set of facts or procedures. An essay is an extended piece of writing that presents and supports a thesis or proposition. Believe me, those admissions officers are experienced and they can definitely spot the difference between a 50 year-old businessperson’s phraseology and a 17-year-old senior’s own voice and manner of expression. No matter what type of essay is being written, all body paragraphs need to be fully developed and provide supporting detail. This detail can come in the form of personal examples, statistics, and/or quotes from an expert. When writing an essay that requires the use of research and outside sources, this information should be used to support the topic sentence. The term body paragraph refers to any paragraph that follows the introduction and comes before the conclusion.

Make Your College Essay Talk Them Into Admitting You

Make Your College Essay Talk Them Into Admitting You My military commitment ends this July and will no longer complicate my academic pursuits. I come from a small, economically depressed town in Northern Wisconson. Many people in this former mining town do not graduate high school and for them college is an idealistic concept, not a reality. This forces you to read each word individually and increases your chances of finding a typo. Reading aloud will also help you ensure your punctuation is correct, and it’s often easier to hear awkward sentences than see them. Let your essay sit for a while before you proofread it. Approaching the essay with a fresh perspective gives your mind a chance to focus on the actual words rather than seeing what you think you wrote. Start with your main idea and follow it from beginning to end. Minoring in Spanish, I have read various pieces of literature from Mexico and have come to respect Mexico and Latin American culture and society. I look forward to conducting this research as it will have a more qualitative tilt than my thesis in psychology, therefore granting an additional understanding of research methodology. As an undergraduate, I was privileged to gain extensive research experience working in a research lab with Dr. Carol. Participating in such a large study from start to finish has validated my interest in academic research as a profession. This fall I will embark on writing an additional honors thesis in political science. While the precise topic of my thesis is undecided, I am particularly interested in Mexico and its development towards a more democratic government. In order to pay for school and continue being active in the community, I enlisted in the Texas Army National Guard as a Medic. Due to the increased deployment schedule and demands placed on all branches of the military after September 11, my attendance in school has necessarily come second to my commitment to the military. There are various semesters where, due to this demand, I attended school less than full time. Despite taking a long time and the difficulty in carving separate time for school with such occupational requirements, I remained persistent aiming towards attending school as my schedule would allow. These pieces rarely showcase who you are as an applicant. The single most important part of your essay preparation may be simply making sure you truly understand the question or essay prompt. When you're finished writing, you need to make sure that your essay still adheres to the prompt. Take time to understand the question or prompt being asked. The duality of the periodic tableâ€"the cold, hard numbers mixed with the reassuring, steadfast patternsâ€"has manifested itself in every aspect of my life. Feelings of being trapped in a stagnant environment permeated my mind, and yet I knew I had to graduate high school; I had to get out. Although most of my friends and family did not understand my ambitions, I knew I wanted to make a difference and used their doubt as motivation to press through. Four days after I graduated high school, I joined the U.S. CollegeXpress has everything you need to simplify your college search, get connected to schools, and find your perfect fit. The world of coding presented itself to me as a way to bring the patterns I loved into the world in a way I could see them. I grew up scaling the tallest trees I could find, desiring the highest vantage point. All good stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end, so shape your story so that it has an introduction, body, and conclusion. Following this natural progression will make your essay coherent and easy to read. This award is given to the top undergraduate student with a demonstrated history of success in statistics. Professor Mitchell obtained a grant to take a class of students to Belgium in order to study the EU. This course revealed a direct correlation between what I had studied in the classroom with the real world. After spending several weeks studying the EU, its history and present movement towards integration, the class flew to Brussels where we met with officials and proceeded to learn firsthand how the EU functioned. The rules for writing a good essay are no different. After you brainstorm, you’ll know what you want to say, but you must decide how you’re going to say it. Create an outline that breaks down the essay into sections. Avoid sorting through your existing English class essays to see if the topics fit the bill.

Psychology Critically Evaluate the Future of Healthcare - 275 Words

Psychology: Critically Evaluate the Future of Healthcare (Essay Sample) Content: Critically Evaluate the Future of Healthcare: The Biomedical or the Biopsychosocial Model?NameInstitutionCritically Evaluate the Future of Healthcare: The Biomedical or the Biopsychosocial Model?Decisions on care of individual patients and delivery of care are mostly based on models of health. The model of health that is embraced determines whether an individual or their health care professional interprets observed changes in their state as showing a disease (Engel, 1977; Wade Halligan, 2004). The model also determines how and when an individual should be described and viewed as sick as well as the kind of health care that should be provided to them. Further, the model chosen shapes the attitude of the health care professionals toward patients as well as their behavior with their patients (Engel, 1977). Therefore, a model of health that a society chooses might be associated with crucial consequences. Societys determination that a certain behavior or observed symptom is a sign of illness places certain privileges on individuals and formal responsibilities on the society. Many models of health suggest there could be a causal association between disease and illness. They help in determining the weight attached to symptoms and consequent commitment of medical resources (Wade Halligan, 2004). This paper provides a critical evaluation the future of health care, with close reference to biomedical and biopsychosocial models. It is demonstrated that the biopsychosocial model (BPSM) holds the future of health care, provided that a full integration of biological, psychological, and social dimensions is realized.Grounded in the molecular biology, the biomedical model (BM) stemmed from Virchows observation that all disease is a consequent of cellular abnormalities (Engel, 1977; Wade Halligan, 2004). BM of illness is highly relevant to many illnesses based on disease. The model has an intuitive appeal, in addition to having gained a huge support from biolo gical findings. The model assumes that deviations from the norm of measurable biological variables fully accounts for a disease. In particular, the model holds that all illnesses, signs and symptoms arise from a disease. A disease may be viewed as an underlying abnormality within an individuals body, in relation to the function or structure of specific body organs. It holds that all diseases result in symptoms, either in their early or late stages of disease progression. Although other factors might affect the results of the disease, such factors do not influence the development and manifestation of the disease (Wade Halligan, 2004). Biomedical model holds that health is sufficiently defined by the absence or lack of disease. The model propagates the belief that mental phenomena have no connection with other disturbances linked to body functioning (Engel, 1977). This assumption means that emotional disturbances or delusions are not related, or are separate from, abnormalities withi n the functioning or structure of the other body organs and systems (Engen, 1977). Further, BM suggests that the patient has little or no responsibility for cause of the illness. This assumption advances the idea that the patient is normally a victim of circumstances in the cause of the illnesses. When an individual is ill and allowed to assume the sick role, they may experience some social and personal benefits, such as absorption from social responsibilities, not being held responsible for their situation, and eligibility for healthcare benefits. Further, BM sees the patient as playing a passive role in the treatment process, other than the expected cooperation (Wade Halligan, 2004).A number of problems associated with BM have been identified. BM of illness is unable to provide a full accountability of a great range of illnesses (Turner, 2001), which has been linked to the models belief that all illnesses have a single underlying cause. Engel (1977, p. 129) argued that medicine a nd psychiatry were in crisis for adhering to a model of disease no longer adequate for the scientific tasks and social responsibilities of either medicine or psychiatry. The reason is that the model assumes the single underlying cause is always the disease or pathology. This assumption is considered as responsible for the medicalisation of anomalous sensations that individuals might often experience, and suspicious considerations for patients who might present with illness but lack observable disease process. According to the model, removing or attenuating the single underlying cause (the disease) leads to cure or improvement in health. Viewed this way, the medical model suggests that mental illness is a myth because it does not have an underlying single disease. As a consequent, the medical model is not relevant to the behavioral and psychological problems classically deemed the domain of psychiatry (Engel, 1977, p. 77). Previous research provides evidence to suggest that this assu mption is wrong (Atkins, Brownell, Kornelsen, Woolard, Whitley, 2013; Wade Halligan, 2004; Stone et al., 2011). It has been demonstrated that many individuals present with symptoms that might have no causal relationships with any underlying disease or pathology (Atkins et al., 2013; Carson et al., 2000; Stone et al., 2011). Termed as functional somatic syndromes, psychological and social factors have an important role to play in their presentation (Atkins et al., 2013; Stone et al., 2011). BM sought to exclude mental illness with no known biological brain dysfunction from the category of mental illnesses. The disorders in this category were identified as problems of living, social adjustment reactions, character disorders, dependency syndromes, existential depressions, and various social deviance conditions (Engel, 1977, p. 129). Some of those who proposed that psychiatry be closely aligned with medicine under the medical model argued that disorders that do not have known biologi cal brain dysfunction should be excluded from mental illnesses category (Engel, 1977). The reason is that it was believed individuals with such conditions had their neurophysiological functional in place, and, therefore, the disorders were as a result of psychosocial variables (Engel, 1977). The proposed exclusion of such disorders meant that they would be handled by professionals outside the medical field. Despite this, patients with no underlying pathology are assigned diagnostic labels, implying the existence of an underlying functional or structural cause. Such medical diagnosis has serious implications not only for the patient, but also for the society and the reputation of medicine. Patients might find the suggestion that they do not have a disease to explain their illness upsetting (Turner, 2001). The healthcare bureaucracy may find it difficult to deal with such patients because it heavily relies on disease labels (Atkins et al., 2013; Stone et al., 2011; Turner, 2001).The insufficiency of BM in explaining disorders with social and psychological origin led Engen (1977) to propose a new model. Engen (1977) argued that a new approach to disease that did not sacrifice the important benefits of BM was needed. The new model, therefore, was required to account for psychological and social aspects of illness. In this light, Engen (1977) proposed BPSM. BPSM holds that biological, psychological, and social levels should be considered in health care delivery. Engel (1977) argued that the three levels are more or less equally important to all illnesses, patients, or condition. BPSM differs from its biomedical counterpart in that it recognizes the role of psychological and social factors in illness. Considered as the status quo of psychiatry (Ghaemi, 2011), the biospychosocial model holds that psychological and social factors significantly affect the perceptions and actions of a patient. This in turn influences the patients experiences of illness (Wade Halligan, 2004). It has also been considered as more scientific and more pragmatic or humanistic (Ghaemi, 2011). Therefore, there is no situation that can be reduced to any one of the three levels. BM provides an organ-based viewpoint, focusing on disease mechanism with the assumption that psychological and social aspects are not necessary in understanding illnesses and treating patients (Lane, 2014). Contrary to this perspective, BPSM provides several perspectives to illnesses. This forms the basis of a conceptual defense used in advancing the model. BPSM might solve some of the limitations of BM. Particularly, BPSM might be used to understand those illnesses with no underlying pathology. Patients whose illnesses are unexplained by underlying disease may have more psychological symptoms than the patients whose illnesses can be explained by underlying pathology (Stone et al., 2011). However, some (e.g. Ghaemi, 2011) do not seem to agree that the future of specialties such as psychiatry lies in BPSM. BPSM has been faulted for showing no commitment to prevent biologisation or medicalisation of psychiatry. The model provides neither a reliable conceptual framework nor sufficient empirical grounds to defend psychiatry against possible biologisation (Ghaemi, 2011). Moreover, it is difficult to determine which aspect of illness (biological, psychological, and social) to prioritize. This leaves room for each person to rely on their own preferences in determining what to prioritise.Biological, psychological, and social factors may be integrated. The challenges associated with the two models in explaining illness may be addressed by bridging these three dimensions. In fact, it has been argued that challenges involved in integrating the three dimensions of BPSM are responsible for the challenges experienced in health care, such resource-related challenges ...
